Chery Auto Malaysia has initiated a recall campaign covering 8,878 Omoda 5 vehicles. The action follows the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) temporary suspension of the model's Vehicle Type Approval certificate. This suspension was triggered by a viral incident in Johor Bahru where an Omoda 5's rear axle allegedly detached while driving. The company released an official statement on October 12 confirming the recall.

All affected units are eligible for complimentary inspection and parts replacement at any authorised Chery service centre nationwide. Vehicle owners can verify if their car is included by entering the Vehicle Identification Number on Chery Malaysia's Product Update webpage. The VIN can be found on a label at the top left of the instrument cluster visible through the windscreen, stamped under the driver's seat, or at the back door.

Owner support and remedy

Chery Auto Malaysia is making every effort to expedite the delivery of replacement components. The first shipment of parts is already underway and will be delivered to service centres in stages. The company has identified the affected vehicles and will proactively contact the respective owners to schedule appointments.

History of similar issues

This is not the first rear axle-related recall for the Omoda 5 in Malaysia. A similar incident in April 2024, also shared widely on social media, prompted a recall of 600 units. In that case, Chery Malaysia identified a miscalibrated welding tip in its production facility as the root cause. That investigation was declared closed about three months later in June 2024. For the current recall, Chery China confirmed the issue involves welding on the SUV’s rear axle trailing arm from a particular production batch.

Model context and production

The recalled Omoda 5 is a discontinued model. It was originally launched in July 2023 and was on sale until September 2025, when it was replaced by the facelifted Chery O5. All Chery models, including the Omoda 5, O5, and Omoda E5, are locally assembled at the Inokom CKD plant in Kulim, Kedah. The new Chery O5 features a multi-link rear suspension, unlike the pre-facelift Omoda 5’s torsion beam setup.

Chery has launched a dedicated risk screening for the same production batch of Omoda 5 models in domestic and other relevant markets. The company is maintaining active communication with regulatory authorities and will disclose the screening results to the public in a responsible and timely manner. For enquiries, customers may contact the Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888.
