BYD sold 490,168 new energy vehicles in October 2026. This marks an 11% increase from the 441,706 units sold in October 2025 and represents the company's sixth consecutive month of year-on-year sales growth. Overseas shipments surged 102.8% annually to 170,194 vehicles, constituting approximately 35% of the automaker's total sales for the month.

Production for October reached 488,104 units. From January through October 2026, the company produced a total of 3,627,050 NEVs. Cumulative sales for the ten-month period stood at 3,621,744 units.

The October sales breakdown shows passenger vehicles dominated, with 483,125 units delivered. Commercial vehicle sales totaled 7,043 units.

Global expansion and new partnerships

BYD is actively localizing production in key international markets. In September 2026, BYD Malaysia appointed Inokom Corporation, a subsidiary of Sime Motors, as its contract assembly partner for completely knocked-down vehicles. The company selected Inokom after a review of domestic market conditions and local manufacturing capabilities.

Another significant move came in Brazil. In August, BYD launched its first Brazilian-made plug-in hybrid flex-fuel car, the Song Pro Super Hybrid. The vehicle can operate on electricity, gasoline, or ethanol. This launch followed a two-year local investment of almost $20 billion.

The company also continues to tailor products for specific markets. In July, it introduced the Racco, its first electric vehicle developed to meet Japan's kei light-car specifications. The company said the base variant can be purchased for less than ¥2 million after applicable taxes and government subsidies.

Market challenges and financial performance

Despite strong sales volume, BYD's financial performance shows signs of pressure. Profit growth slowed to 28% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, missing market forecasts. Analysts attribute this to global market saturation, sluggish domestic demand, and significant foreign exchange pressures, which surpassed RMB 2 billion in the quarter.

Chinese automakers are competing more aggressively for customers abroad due to softening demand at home. This export push faces potential headwinds, as the European Union is considering new restrictions on hybrid vehicle imports from China. Such measures could affect a key segment of BYD's export portfolio.

The competitive landscape in China remains intense. Rival Xiaomi delivered more than 50,000 electric vehicles in October, its highest monthly total this year. From January to October, Xiaomi delivered approximately 336,000 units, representing 61% of its 2026 target of 550,000 vehicles. Morgan Stanley, however, reaffirmed its overweight rating on BYD's H-shares with a target price of HK$114. The firm's October export growth of 102.8% shows its strategic pivot to international markets amid shifting global trade dynamics.
