BMW has released specifications for the next-generation internal combustion engine (ICE) variants of the 3 Series, codenamed G50. The models will feature four- and six-cylinder engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid electrification and will be sold alongside the battery-electric i3.

Leading the regular model range is the M350 xDrive. It uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine producing 443 hp and 580 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Performance Figures

The M350 xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. According to BMW, these figures represent a significant increase over its predecessor.

Drift Mode and Chassis

A key feature for the M Performance model is the Drift Moment function. This drift mode, enabled by the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, can direct all engine power to the rear wheels when dynamic stability control is deactivated. BMW states that Drift Moment will be made available to customers next year via a remote software update.

The M350 xDrive receives specific chassis tuning with increased torsional and vertical stiffness. Adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential, and variable sport steering are fitted as standard.

Production and Model Range

Production of the M350 xDrive is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year. It will be joined by a four-cylinder variant, expected to have a 2.0-liter displacement. Both ICE variants share a new suspension architecture.

The G50 generation uses a double-joint spring strut front suspension and a five-link rear setup. Compared to the outgoing G20 model, the new car has a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks. Adaptive and adaptive M suspension are optional. Wheel sizes now go up to 20 inches, with front tires sized 245/35R20 and rears at 275/30R20.

The internal combustion G50 3 Series is expected to go on sale later this year after the launch of the electric i3. Autocar reports that deliveries in the UK market may begin early next year.
