VinFast has reportedly asked suppliers to halt all activities related to three electric vehicle programmes in India. The company is pausing local manufacturing plans for the VF 3, VF 6, and VF 7 models while it reassesses costs. This development comes roughly a year after the Vietnamese automaker, backed by conglomerate Vingroup, entered the Indian market in September 2025.

The paused programmes

The affected models include the VF 3, a two-door SUV regarded as VinFast's most affordably priced offering for India. The VF 6 and VF 7 SUVs are also part of the pause. The latter two models are currently imported as kits from Vietnam for assembly within India. According to the memo circulated to suppliers in July, VinFast has "temporarily" halted all development work linked to these three vehicles.

Supplier instructions and cost scrutiny

Suppliers were instructed to "hold all activities" on the three programmes. They were also asked to submit a detailed breakdown of the total amount invested to date across the projects. This breakdown must encompass tooling, engineering, and material costs requiring payment or reimbursement, along with supporting documentation where available. One source indicated to Reuters that VinFast had been unable to meet its intended cost targets for developing components locally, a shortfall that prompted the operational pause.

Sourcing components domestically had been a key part of VinFast's strategy to reduce reliance on costly imports and enable more competitive pricing within the Indian market.

Company statement and strategic adjustments

Following the initial report, VinFast provided clarification on its production approach. The company stated that the shift concerns future models, confirming it would continue importing and assembling the VF 6 and VF 7 currently available for sale in India. VinFast added that it intends to develop models designed specifically for the Indian market rather than relying solely on existing global models, which it said would help quicker local sourcing.

"India is an important market in VinFast's long-term business and manufacturing strategy," a company representative said. The representative added that VinFast is making "appropriate adjustments" to its products, based on market research and customer feedback, to "better meet the needs of Indian customers."

Manufacturing footprint and sales

The pause represents a setback for VinFast's ambitious plans in India. The company established its first factory outside Vietnam in southern India last year and had committed to a $2 billion investment as part of efforts to build a regional manufacturing hub serving South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. To date, VinFast has sold around 10,000 cars in India. This figure includes sales to its affiliate ride-hailing company, Green SM.
