Volkswagen rebrands ID.4 as ID. Tiguan with 600 km range
Volkswagen is renaming and facelifting its ID.4 electric SUV as the ID. Tiguan, offering up to 600 km of WLTP range.

Volkswagen has confirmed it will rename and redesign the ID.4 electric SUV as the ID. Tiguan. The facelifted model, scheduled for a full reveal in early October, will offer a WLTP range of up to 600 kilometers.
The ID. Tiguan is a heavily updated replacement for the ID.4. A camouflaged prototype shows a visor-like front end with a full-width light bar. Its design includes boxy air curtain inlets flanking a slim center intake. At the rear, it features full-width taillights with quad tumbler-inspired clusters, an illuminated VW badge, a simple rear bumper, and a diffuser-like valance. The styling takes cues from the ID. Polo and ID. Cross rather than the third-generation combustion-engine Tiguan.
Design and technical updates signal a refreshed EV offering
Volkswagen also showed a sportier version with larger air intakes and vertical bumper corner lights. This suggests a potential first R-Line appearance package for the ID. Lineup. The ID. Tiguan receives the latest-generation APP and AKA motors, although they will still produce the same 190 PS, 286 PS and 299 PS outputs as before. The main benefit is improved efficiency.
The model will offer two battery options: a 58 kWh usable LFP pack and a 77 kWh NMC pack. This contributes to an increased WLTP range, now between 450 km and 600 km. The previous ID.4 range was between 438 km and 572 km.
| Battery Type | Usable Capacity | WLTP Range (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| LFP | 58 kWh | Up to 450 km |
| NMC | 77 kWh | Up to 600 km |
Interior expected to adopt ID.3 Neo styling with physical controls
The interior has not been shown yet, but an overhaul is anticipated. It is expected to align with the ID.3 Neo's design, likely featuring a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen. Volkswagen aims for higher quality materials, vastly improved ergonomics, and actual buttons for frequently used controls. This marks a reversal from earlier ID. Models, which removed physical steering wheel and air-con controls that the combustion Tiguan later reinstated.
Name change leverages Tiguan’s strong brand equity amid EV strategy shift
Volkswagen is renaming the facelifted ID.4 as the ID. Tiguan to use familiar names for EVs to keep buyers happier than using numbers. This continues a trend of giving proper names to electric models, following the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. The ID. Tiguan is the third established Volkswagen name to move into the electric line-up.
The move comes amid financial pressure and declining sales. Volkswagen is cutting model lines to stem massive losses. Deliveries of the ID.4 and ID.5 fell to 53,700 in the first half of 2026, down from 84,900 a year earlier. The coupé-styled ID.5 will get no successor and is being discontinued. Since 2021, Volkswagen has delivered more than 950,000 ID.4 and ID.5 vehicles, and they were the group’s best-selling electric models in 2025 with 163,400 deliveries.
ID. Tiguan to join combustion Tiguan and Tayron in showroom from 2027
The ID. Tiguan will reach markets at the beginning of 2027. It will succeed both the ID.4 and ID.5 and be sold alongside the Tiguan with combustion and hybrid powertrains. The third-generation Tiguan is also available in a long-wheelbase form sold as the Tayron, reinforcing Volkswagen's dual-powertrain strategy for the compact SUV segment. Thomas Schäfer, Chief Executive Officer of the Volkswagen brand, has overseen this strategic pivot.
Volkswagen has not released final specifications for the ID. Tiguan, which are expected at the premiere. The ID. Tiguan will be officially revealed in early October with all details disclosed at that time.
