Seputeh MP urges DBKL to study congestion

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has urged Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to address worsening traffic congestion in three key areas. In a Facebook post, she specifically called for studies on Bukit Jalil, Sri Petaling, and Old Klang Road.

Kok cited a statement by KL mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud from a Bangsar townhall session on August 24. She endorsed DBKL's plan for a six-month study on road capacity and infrastructure in Bangsar to manage rapid development. Kok described this as a very appropriate action.

Traffic Congestion Causes

Kok attributed the critical traffic problems in Bukit Jalil and Sri Petaling to a lack of adequate public transport access. She pointed to insufficient LRT and MRT station networks in new focus areas. The existing road network cannot be expanded further, she stated. Despite this, DBKL is still seen to be approving high-density development projects in the area.

The MP also requested a feasibility study for the proposed 17,000-unit Bandar Madani project in Bukit Jalil. Kok said this project has sparked deep concerns and anxiety among local residents.

Old Klang Road Proposal

Traffic on Old Klang Road is notoriously bad during peak times. Congestion is exacerbated by controversial bus lanes, illegally-parked vehicles, and numerous traffic light junctions. Bottlenecks are common where the thoroughfare reduces to just one or two lanes.

Kok referenced statistics showing the total traffic flow on Old Klang Road during the 2026 Chinese New Year celebrations reached 200,000 vehicles per day. This makes it one of the busiest and densest routes in all of Kuala Lumpur.

To overcome this issue, Kok urged DBKL to collaborate with the public works department (JKR). She wants them to study the need for constructing an additional double-decker road or flyover to relieve congestion along Old Klang Road.

Call for Comprehensive Planning

Overall, Kok urged the government and DBKL to present a comprehensive plan to upgrade existing infrastructure first. This should happen before approving any new development projects in the future. Development should not sacrifice the quality of life of the people, she added.

The MP concluded her Facebook post by posing a question to the public. She asked what people think about whether a double-decker road or flyover would work.
