Malaysia's new vehicle market fell by 2% year-on-year in August 2026. The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) reported registrations of 71,428 units, down from 73,041 units in August 2025.

This moderate decline followed two months of strong growth. The earlier uptick was supported by accelerating economic growth, with GDP rising 5.8% year-on-year in the second quarter.

Year-to-Date Market Performance

In the first eight months of 2026, the overall vehicle market expanded by 3%. Total sales reached 530,478 units, up from 516,862 units in the same period last year. This growth was driven by passenger vehicles.

Passenger vehicle sales rose 4% to 497,595 units. Commercial vehicle sales, however, declined sharply by 14% to 32,883 units. Overall vehicle production in Malaysia increased by a modest 1% to 496,985 units in this period.

Manufacturer Sales Breakdown

Market leader Perodua's sales fell by almost 5% year-to-date, reaching 219,560 units. The Bezza was its best-selling model with 65,697 sales. The company recently launched the Traz compact SUV and its first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the QV-E.

Proton reported a 40% jump in global vehicle sales to 141,421 units for the first eight months. Its overseas sales accounted for 6,059 units. The Saga was its top model with almost 60,000 sales, followed by the X50 compact SUV and the e.Mas 5 BEV.

Toyota's local sales declined by 9.5% to 72,942 units year-to-date. Strong demand continued for models like the Hilux pickup and the Vios sedan.

Electric Vehicle Sales Surge

Separate industry data shows a significant shift towards electrification. Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) more than doubled in the first eight months of 2026, reaching 47,500 units.

Proton led the BEV segment with 21,840 sales. It was followed by BYD-Denza with 7,780 units and Chery with 3,840 units.

Revised Market Forecasts

The MAA has raised its full-year 2026 total market forecast. The new forecast is 800,000 units, up from a previous estimate of 790,000 units. This revision follows the market's strong performance in June and July.

Analyst firm GlobalData offers a different projection. It forecasts a 2% drop in light vehicle sales to 813,000 units this year. This would be down from a record 827,000 units in 2025. GlobalData expects volumes to decline slightly again in 2027, to 807,000 units.
