Boston Dynamics Opens Robot Training Center at Hyundai
Boston Dynamics has opened a Robotics Metaplant Application Center at Hyundai's Georgia plant to train Atlas humanoid robots for automotive manufacturing

Boston Dynamics has opened a new training and testing facility for its Atlas humanoid robots at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) near Savannah, Georgia. The US-based robotics firm, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, announced the launch of the Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) this week.
This move follows Toyota's recent announcement of plans to deploy around 400,000 of its own in-house developed humanoid robots across its global manufacturing operations in the medium term. Boston Dynamics first unveiled the Atlas robot at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year.
Training for Plant-Floor Tasks
The RMAC serves as a testbed for integrating Atlas robots directly into Hyundai's automobile manufacturing operations. According to Boston Dynamics, the robots are being trained in real-world environments.
Initial training focuses on logistics and sequencing of automotive parts before they are placed in the correct order for assembly. The company stated that by 2030, applications will extend to component assembly. Over time, Atlas is expected to take on tasks involving repetitive motions and strenuous work like lifting heavy loads.
Hyundai's Deployment and Production Plans
Hyundai Motor Group plans a significant rollout of Atlas robots across its global manufacturing network. The automaker will begin by deploying 25,000 units at Hyundai Motor and Kia's global assembly plants over the next few years.
To meet this demand, a new production facility will be built in the United States. This facility will be capable of producing up to 30,000 robots annually.
| Deployment Plan | Figure |
|---|---|
| Initial global deployment target at Hyundai/Kia plants | 25,000 units |
| Planned annual production capacity of new US facility | 30,000 robots |
Facility Expansion and Broader Applications
The first phase of the RMAC is now operational at the HMGMA site. Further expansion is already planned.
Next year, Boston Dynamics will move its RMAC operations to a larger facility within the HMGMA complex. This move will expand the operation tenfold from its current size. The new facility will not only support preparing Atlas robots for increased automotive industry deployments but will also focus on exploring new applications in other sectors.
These sectors include manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food & beverage, and life sciences.
Zack Jackowski, Boston Dynamics' chief product and technology officer, commented on the partnership. "Together with HMG, we are pioneering physical AI at enterprise scale," he said. Jackowski added that the company has established a strategy to optimize its supply chain, production, testing, and deployment capabilities for Atlas.
The RMAC reinforces a shared ambition to create a future where robots amplify human potential by making work safer and more productive.
