VinFast is developing two electric vehicles specifically for the Indian market. This strategic shift comes weeks after the Vietnamese automaker shelved plans to manufacture certain global models in the country.

The move represents a pivot from VinFast's earlier approach of modifying existing vehicles for India. The loss-making manufacturer sees India as central to its growth after struggling to achieve scale in the US and European markets. VinFast has committed $2 billion to its Indian operations, where it opened its first overseas factory last year. The company plans to turn that site into a manufacturing hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Supplier Engagement and Development

The company has initiated early-stage talks with Indian suppliers regarding the two new vehicles, which are internally designated VF X and VF Y. The sources cautioned that the plans remain under review and could still change. A VinFast spokesperson declined to comment on the report, telling reporters that details on new products would be shared "at the appropriate time."

In August, VinFast executives met with approximately 200 Indian suppliers to discuss the company's plans. One source noted that suppliers have been involved from the start of this development cycle. This early collaboration aims to manage costs effectively and avoid the problems that led to the suspension of other models in July.

Model Specifications and Market Positioning

The VF X model is intended to slot between the VF 3 and VF 6 for size. This reflects a perceived preference among Indian buyers for larger vehicles, though the final design is reportedly still being finalized. VinFast is targeting a price under $12,000 for the VF X, a figure close to the VF 3's price in Vietnam. This would place the vehicle in a large but highly competitive segment of the Indian EV market, currently led by Tata Motors.

Recent Manufacturing Adjustments

In July, VinFast paused its plans to manufacture the VF 3, VF 6, and VF 7 models in India. The company concluded it could not reduce costs sufficiently to meet its target prices for local production. However, the VF 6 and VF 7 continue to be sold in India through a complete knock-down (CKD) kit arrangement. These kits are shipped from Vietnam and assembled locally, a practice VinFast intends to maintain.

Current Operations and Capacity

VinFast has sold around 10,000 vehicles in India since entering the market in September 2025. The company's Indian assembly plant currently has an annual production capacity of 50,000 cars. This capacity is expandable to 150,000 units. The facility has already received approval for a second-phase expansion.
