Proton has reported a record-breaking month for domestic sales in August 2026. The automaker's total group sales, which include exports and the smart brand, reached 22,632 units for the month.

According to the company, this marks the best overall monthly performance since January 2010, though it noted some potential confusion around that historical comparison. The August figure represents a significant increase, or an additional 4,190 units, over the 18,442 units sold in July.

Year-to-date sales for the first eight months of 2026 have now reached 141,421 units. This is 40.2% higher than the volume achieved in the corresponding period of 2025. Proton estimates its market share for August was 27.9%, with its year-to-date volume accounting for 25.6% of the total industry volume.

Model Performance Breakdown

The Saga continued as the brand's best-selling model in August, with 7,347 units sold. While this was 467 units lower than its May performance, the model's year-to-date total of nearly 60,000 units keeps it 33.3% ahead of its pace from the same period last year.

Sales of the S70 surpassed 3,000 units for the first time, reaching 3,235 in August. This was a 13.2% increase from July. The X50 saw 2,274 units sold, a slight dip of 17 units from the previous month. The X90 MC recorded sales of 471 units, an increase of 30 units over July.

Electrified Vehicle Sales

Combined sales for Proton's eMas range-comprising the eMas 5, eMas 7, and eMas 7 PHEV-reached 6,047 units in August. This brought the year-to-date total for the electrified lineup to 27,860 units.

The eMas 5 was the standout, with 4,818 units sold setting a new national monthly sales record for a single electric vehicle model. The eMas 7 contributed 613 units, while the eMas 7 PHEV added 616 units to the total.

Executive Commentary and Outlook

Proton's deputy CEO, Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa, linked the record to customer confidence. "By achieving the highest monthly domestic sales volume in Proton's history, we have reached an important milestone that reflects the confidence customers place in our products and services," he said.

He also highlighted gains in the export business, particularly in assembling vehicles for partner Geely, and the eMas brand's dominant share in the EV market. These factors position the company well to meet its year-end volume and financial goals, which the executive said would benefit the entire local automotive ecosystem. The ongoing efforts by the eMas team were specifically credited for the brand's strong electric vehicle market position.
