Mazda targets 60% local content for Malaysia-assembled CX-5
The third-generation Mazda CX-5 SUV, launching in Malaysia this October, will transition to local assembly within 12-16 months.

The third-generation Mazda CX-5 is scheduled for its Malaysian market launch on October 8, 2026. It will arrive first as a fully imported model before local CKD assembly begins in approximately 12 to 16 months.
According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the locally assembled third-generation CX-5 is targeted to achieve a 60% local content level. MIDA stated this initiative aims to strengthen Malaysia's position as a regional manufacturing and export base for Mazda.
Local supply chain development
MIDA said the localization of the CX-5 offers a platform for Malaysian automotive suppliers to participate more deeply in Mazda's supply chain. The goal is to develop higher-value local capabilities to compete within regional and global automotive supply chains.
In support of this effort, MIDA and distributor Bermaz Auto have brought together 16 Malaysian automotive vendors through a strategic vendor development program. Five memoranda of understanding were exchanged between Malaysian and Japanese companies. The involved vendors operate in sectors including chassis and suspension, stamping, precision machining, plastic injection moulding, cockpit modules, seating systems, and insulation components.
Vehicle specifications and features
The SUV was previewed in Malaysia in June 2026. Bermaz Auto executive chairman Tan Sri Ben Yeoh revealed the model will be offered in Malaysia solely with a 2.5-litre engine. This is likely the newer e-Skyactiv G powerplant, a naturally aspirated petrol inline-four with a 24-volt mild-hybrid system. It produces 141 PS and 238 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels through a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission.
The third-generation model represents a significant size increase over its predecessor.
| Dimension | Third-Gen CX-5 | Previous Gen | Difference |

Updated cabin and infotainment
A major change is inside the cabin. The CX-5 now features a large central touchscreen, with sizes of 12.9 inches or 15.6 inches. The unit previewed in Malaysia had the 15.6-inch screen.
The previous Mazda Connect system with its Commander Control rotary dial has been replaced. The new infotainment system is built on Android Automotive OS. The updated cabin also includes a wireless device charger.
The vehicle has been available for booking with an estimated starting price.
