The new Mazda CX-5 will be launched in Malaysia on October 8. Bermaz Auto executive chairman Ben Yeoh confirmed the third-generation SUV will initially arrive as a completely built-up (CBU) import, with an estimated price of RM170,000.

Local assembly, or completely knocked-down (CKD) production, is scheduled to begin in about 12 to 16 months. The new model will be sold alongside the current second-generation CX-5, which remains popular.

Powertrain and Drivetrain Details

The model shown at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show in June featured a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated e-Skyactiv G four-cylinder engine paired with a 24-volt mild hybrid system. For markets outside Europe, this setup produces 181 PS and 242 Nm of torque, with an electric motor adding 6.5 PS and 60.5 Nm.

Other markets, including Australia and Indonesia, receive a version without the mild hybrid system. This engine is more powerful, producing 188 PS and 257 Nm on RON95 fuel. Both engine options are paired with a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission, available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Focus on Improved Practicality

Mazda has focused on addressing the previous model's practicality shortcomings. The new CX-5 has a significantly longer wheelbase, which increases interior space and improves handling stability. Rear doors open wider for easier access.

The cabin features 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats. The boot capacity has grown by 61 liters compared to the outgoing model. Overall dimensions have increased to accommodate the longer wheelbase while maintaining the vehicle's proportions.

The new CX-5 is 4,690 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,695 mm tall. This represents an increase of 115 mm in length, 15 mm in width, and 15 mm in height over the previous generation. The wheelbase now measures 2,815 mm.

Redesigned Interior and Technology

The exterior design evolution includes a black frame around the Kodo grille and CX-60-style taillights, following a new "Wearable Gear" concept. The interior, however, has undergone a complete redesign that removes most physical controls.

A large touchscreen, measuring either 12.9 or 15.6 inches, dominates the dashboard. This change eliminates physical buttons and switches, including those for the air-conditioning system. The display integrates Google services like Maps, the Gemini AI voice assistant, and the Play Store-a first for Mazda.

A full 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a Qi wireless charger are now standard. Optional features remain, including a 12-speaker Bose sound system and a panoramic glass roof. The vehicle was first revealed globally in July 2024.
