Geely has launched the Monjaro EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV in Egypt. The D-segment model is the first market for the vehicle, which is slated for later introduction in Australia, Europe, and the UK.

The powertrain is an upgraded version of the E-Motive Intelligence (EM-i) system. It uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter BHE15 four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The system's total output varies based on the drivetrain configuration.

Powertrain and Performance

The front-wheel-drive Monjaro EM-i combines a 144 PS, 230 Nm turbo engine with a 163 PS, 343 Nm electric motor. This delivers a total system output of 277 PS and 544 Nm. Geely claims this configuration can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 km/h.

An optional all-wheel-drive system adds a rear induction motor. This boosts the electric output to 272 PS and 493 Nm. Combined with the turbo engine, total system power rises to 340 PS and 667 Nm. According to the source, this allows the two-tonne SUV to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, though its top speed is slightly lower at 190 km/h.

Battery and Charging Specifications

The plug-in hybrid uses different battery packs depending on the model. The source, citing figures on the outdated NEDC cycle, provides the following specifications for electric range and charging.

DrivetrainBattery CapacityNEDC Electric RangeDC Fast Charging Max30-80% Charge TimeAC Charging (6.6 kW) 20-100% Time
FWD18.4 kWh (CATL LFP)92 km38 kW20 minutes3 hours
AWD29.8 kWh (Aegis)130 km78 kW15 minutes4.2 hours

The report notes that real-world WLTP cycle ranges will be lower, likely around 80 km for the FWD and 110 km for the AWD model.

Design and Interior Features

Externally, the Monjaro EM-i mirrors the design of the Xingyue L i-HEV. It features a new front bumper with silver accents, a vertically-slatted grille, and a rear bumper with large fake vents. The SUV rides on 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels sourced from the Galaxy M7.

Inside, the cabin has been completely redesigned. It incorporates elements from Geely's newer electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. A spokesperson for the brand highlighted the upgraded materials, stating it "does feel a step up from the norm."

Notable features include a steering wheel from the Galaxy M9, a stitched dashboard, and trim with wood and metal finishes. The digital cockpit consists of a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 25.6-inch head-up display, and a 15.4-inch central infotainment screen. The centre console includes physical temperature toggles for the air conditioning, a departure from most recent Geely models. Other amenities are quilted seats, smartphone holders, a 50-watt wireless charger, and a 16-speaker Flyme Audio system. A passenger dash panel features a mountain motif, referencing the vehicle's name and Mount Kilimanjaro.
